Writtle Art Group 2018 Autumn Exhibition

On a sunny weekend, more than 260 visitors attended the art show which included 250 original paintings by local artists from the Writtle Art Group, both regular and associate members. 

As a usual feature of the Autumn exhibition, the general public were asked to vote for their favourite framed picture entered by members of the Monday morning art group. This competition dates back to 1976, with the award of a palette-shaped trophy intended to commemorate former member, Leslie Bass.

In all, 215 valid votes were cast for the Bass Trophy. The winner this year was Helen Mariner with 18 votes for her painting ‘Midnight Fox’. There was a tie for second place, both with 13 votes, for Peter Robson’s picture ‘Manhattan Memories’ and John Robinson’s portrait of Clive James. Reflecting the high standard of this year’s show, it was interesting that the remaining 171 votes were spread widely throughout the group overall.

Denise Allen Seascape Demonstration at Writtle Art Group

A gathering of over 50 thoroughly enjoyed Denise Allen's seascape demonstration.  Despite a gruelling and tiring 2 hour + drive from St Olaves in Norfolk, Denise's highly informative description of the methods she adopts to create the her sparkling acrylic seascapes will no doubt inspire many to have a go.  We thank Denise, it was excellent!

Michelle Parsons Demonstration at Writtle Art Group

Michelle Parsons' enthusiasm and professional competence inspired and enthused during the latest demonstration at Writtle Art Group.  A large audience was taken through the creative stages Michelle employs to produce her very popular paintings.  Fresh fish (literally) photographed and edited on the iPad was used to help composition and then identify and enhance colours present.  Before we knew it a quick charcoal sketch and some acrylic paint had produced a typical Michelle Parsons painting.  It looked all so easy.

Susan Boddy Demonstration at Writtle Art Group

Keeping things simple sounds easy but we know it is easier said than done, but Susan Boddy's well prepared and informative demonstration showed how the use of a limited pallet and using a full range of tones can lead to success.

Susan worked her way through three paintings.  The first used one colour, the second used two colours, and the third used three colours.  The results are below and we thank her for an informative and very enjoyable session with us.

Writtle Art Group Spring 2018 Exhibition

Writtle Art Group held their annual Spring Exhibition in the Village Hall on the weekend before Easter. Fortunately the weather was kind and a steady flow of visitors turned out to view another display of varied and highly talented work. Attendance figures were 271 over the two days, up by more than 50 on last Autumn’s exhibition. A total of 285 paintings were on show, of which 38 were sold to the buying public for an impressive sum of £1,424.

On display for a charity raffle was a rural street scene donated by the Suffolk artist, Reg Siger, who had demonstrated his use of ink and acrylic watercolours to the Writtle Art Group on 26th February. With generous support from the public, a total of £174 was raised from the raffle for Farleigh Hospice. The winning ticket was number 190 with the painting going to a local Writtle resident.
